Istanbul Spice Market Guide: The Egyptian Bazaar Complete Visit

The Mısır Çarşısı — known to visitors as the Spice Market or Egyptian Bazaar — has been Istanbul's aromatic commercial heart since 1664, when it was built as part of the New Mosque complex in Eminönü. The name Egyptian Bazaar reflects its original purpose: receiving and selling goods arriving on ships from Egypt and the broader Ottoman trade network. Today it remains one of Istanbul's most sensory experiences, though its commercial character has evolved considerably.

The inner arcade houses around 90 permanent shops selling Turkish delight in every conceivable combination, saffron of variable quality, rose petals, dried fruits, nuts, medicinal herbs, and spice blends. Quality varies enormously between the tourist-facing shops nearest the gates and the specialist dealers toward the middle and rear of the bazaar. Buying saffron from the bazaar requires care — real saffron is expensive, and many stalls sell marigold or safflower as substitutes.

Outside the bazaar's main gates, the surrounding streets and the Rüstem Paşa Mosque courtyard above hold some of Istanbul's best food market action: fresh fish, vegetables, live chickens, and household goods served to the neighbourhood rather than visitors.
