Princes Islands Istanbul Day Trip: Car-Free Island Escape Guide

The Princes Islands are Istanbul's most enchanting day trip escape — a chain of nine car-free islands in the Sea of Marmara, just 15-30 minutes by ferry from the city's Asian shore, where Victorian-era wooden mansions line quiet lanes navigated only by horse-drawn carriages and bicycles. The absence of motor vehicles gives the islands a unique peace and character utterly unlike anything the mainland city offers.

Buyukada (Big Island) is the largest and most visited, a hilly island of grand 19th-century summer homes that once belonged to Istanbul's Greek, Jewish, and Armenian elite — many of the island's grandest mansions have survived despite decades of neglect, their carved wooden balconies and ornamental gardens creating an atmosphere of faded aristocratic grandeur that is extraordinarily evocative of the cosmopolitan Ottoman city before the upheavals of the 20th century.

Hire a bicycle or board a horse-drawn carriage at the ferry pier to explore the island's hilltop monasteries and the beautiful bay at the southern end. Heybeliada (Halki) is smaller and quieter with pine forests and a small harbour that feels genuinely remote despite being so close to one of the world's largest cities. Ferries run frequently from Kabatas pier on the European side — bring a picnic as the island restaurants are overpriced during summer months. The round trip is one of Istanbul's most rewarding and affordable day escapes.
