Kadikoy Istanbul: Asian Side Food Markets & Neighbourhood Guide

Kadikoy is the beating heart of Istanbul's Asian side, a bustling neighbourhood on the Anatolian shore of the Bosphorus that is beloved by locals for its excellent food markets, independent bookshops, lively bar scene, and a self-consciously progressive character that sets it apart from the more touristic European side. Many Istanbul residents consider Kadikoy the most genuinely liveable and enjoyable neighbourhood in the entire city.

The Kadikoy Bazaar is the neighbourhood's commercial heart — a covered and open-air market stretching through several city blocks where fishmongers, cheese sellers, spice vendors, pickle shops, and fresh produce stalls operate at maximum intensity from morning until late afternoon. The variety and quality of produce on offer surpasses anything available in the tourist-facing markets of the European side and reflects the neighbourhood's serious local food culture.

The streets of Moda, Kadikoy's most desirable residential sub-neighbourhood, are lined with independent cafes, wine bars, and small restaurants that cater to a young, educated crowd seeking alternatives to the tourist-facing establishments across the strait. The Moda coastline walk along the Sea of Marmara is particularly rewarding at sunset, when the European side skyline glows in the evening light and the city's legendary silhouette is at its most beautiful. Taking the ferry from Eminonu to Kadikoy is itself one of Istanbul's essential experiences — a 20-minute crossing that offers views of the full Bosphorus panorama for the price of a transit token.
