Eyüp: Istanbul's Sacred Pilgrimage Neighbourhood

Eyüp Sultan sits at the head of the Golden Horn, just beyond the ancient Byzantine city walls, and occupies a position of profound religious significance in Istanbul's spiritual geography. The Eyüp Sultan Mosque and the adjacent tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari — the companion of the Prophet Muhammad who died during the Arab siege of Constantinople in 674–678 AD — make this one of the holiest sites in the Islamic world, drawing pilgrims from across Turkey and beyond every day of the year, with particular intensity during Ramadan and religious holidays.

The neighbourhood's streets radiate from the mosque courtyard in a dense weave of market stalls selling prayer beads, calligraphy, religious texts, and traditional sweets. The Pierre Loti Café, named for the French novelist who was enchanted by Istanbul in the late nineteenth century and who reputedly wrote here overlooking the Golden Horn, can be reached by cable car from the waterfront — the view from the hilltop cemetery and café terrace, across the minarets and the Golden Horn to the old city silhouette, is one of Istanbul's most romantic and least-photographed panoramas.

Beyond its religious identity, Eyüp has become a destination for Istanbul's design-conscious residents drawn to the atmospheric Ottoman-era streets, the antique dealers and artisan workshops clustered around Balat on the Golden Horn shore, and the neighbourhood's extraordinary concentration of historic mosques, türbe (mausoleums), and fountain houses. The ferry connection from Eminönü makes Eyüp a natural extension of a Golden Horn itinerary, and the neighbourhood's authentic local restaurants — serving traditional Turkish breakfast and evening mezes without tourist pricing — reward visitors who arrive without expectations.
