Istanbul Bosphorus Cruise Guide: Ferries, Boats, and Best Routes
A Bosphorus cruise is the single most rewarding perspective on Istanbul — from the water, the city reveals itself as an extraordinary accumulation of Ottoman mosques, Baroque palaces, 19th-century yalı waterfront mansions, and the modern skyline of two continents simultaneously visible across a strait that has defined world history since antiquity. No visit to Istanbul is complete without spending time on the water.
The public ferries operated by İDO and Şehir Hatları are the most authentic and affordable option — the long Bosphorus ferry from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı on the Black Sea coast is one of the great urban boat journeys in the world, passing the Dolmabahçe Palace, the Rumeli Hisarı fortress, the Bosphorus Bridge, and dozens of Ottoman and Ottoman-era waterfront structures over three hours each way. The round trip costs just a few Turkish lira with an Istanbulkart transport card.
Private sunset cruises from Ortaköy, Beşiktaş, and Eminönü offer a more premium experience with cocktails and music, catering to the tourist market at considerable markup. For the best of both worlds, take the public ferry northbound in the morning when the light is best on the European shore, and return by late afternoon when the Asian shore catches the golden hour. The small fishing villages at Anadolu Kavağı serve excellent grilled fish at the journey's end.
