Istanbul Bazaar Shopping Guide: Grand Bazaar and Beyond
Istanbul's bazaar culture extends far beyond the famous Grand Bazaar to a network of specialist markets, covered hans, and neighbourhood pazars that offer an authentic commercial experience stretching back to the Byzantine era. Understanding how the bazaar system works transforms shopping from a tourist activity into a genuine cultural immersion.
The Grand Bazaar's 4,000 shops spread across 60 covered streets, with distinct neighbourhoods devoted to gold jewellery, carpets, leather goods, ceramics, and spices. Haggling is expected for most categories, though the art has softened considerably in the tourist-facing stalls nearest the main gates. The real bargains and craftsmanship lie deeper in the complex, in the hans — courtyard warehouse buildings — where wholesale dealers and specialist craftsmen work.
Beyond the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar in Eminönü remains essential for Turkish delight, saffron, dried fruits, and medicinal herbs. The Arasta Bazaar behind the Blue Mosque offers quieter carpet and textile shopping with knowledgeable dealers. The Kapalı market in Kadıköy on the Asian side is where Istanbulites actually shop for fresh produce and provisions.
