Fatih Istanbul: Old City Neighbourhood Guide for 2025
Fatih is the ancient heart of Istanbul, the district that encompasses what Byzantine historians called Constantinople's historic peninsula — a hilly, densely populated neighbourhood that contains more layers of history per square kilometre than almost anywhere on earth. Most tourist sights are technically in Fatih: the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, and Grand Bazaar all fall within its boundaries.
But the Fatih that locals know extends far beyond the tourist circuit into conservative Islamic neighbourhoods of astonishing character. The Çarşamba district around the Wednesday market is a world unto itself — women in çarşaf, street vendors selling dried goods from wooden crates, and a pace of life that feels unchanged for generations. The Fener and Balat neighbourhoods along the Golden Horn are the district's cultural counterweight: home to Greek Orthodox churches, synagogues, and Armenian schools alongside the colourful houses that Instagram has made famous.
Fatih rewards walking. The old Byzantine walls still stand for several kilometres along the district's western edge, and the Theodosian Walls are among the most impressive surviving ancient fortifications in the world.
