Istanbul Data Strengthens Link Between Exercise and Anxiety Reduction
Residents who run or hike regularly report measurable drops in anxiety scores within eight weeks.
How we reported this
A survey of 1,200 Istanbul adults conducted by Acibadem Hospital Network in May 2026 found that those who exercised at least three times weekly scored 28 percent lower on standard anxiety inventories than those who did not.
The finding arrives as summer temperatures push residents outdoors and as workplace stress reports at district health centers climb 15 percent above last year’s figures. Mental health clinics in Kadikoy and Besiktas logged 420 new anxiety-related visits in June alone, many tied to long commutes and extended screen time.
Paths that deliver results
Runners along the Bosphorus path between Ortakoy and Bebek log average heart rates that correspond to the moderate-intensity zone linked to anxiety relief. Further north, weekend hikers in Belgrad Forest cover 8-kilometer loops that combine elevation gain with shaded pine cover. Both routes sit within 30 minutes of central districts by metro or ferry, removing common barriers to consistent use.
Local trainers at the Acibadem Sports Medicine unit now prescribe 45-minute sessions on these routes for patients referred from the hospital’s psychiatry department. A six-week pilot that ended last month showed average GAD-7 scores falling from 11.4 to 7.2 among the 64 participants who completed the program.
Cost remains low. A monthly pass for the municipal ferry network used by many Bosphorus runners costs 250 lira, while Belgrad Forest entry remains free. Participants often finish sessions at nearby tea houses where a glass of strong çay runs 20 lira, turning the outing into a brief social ritual that reinforces adherence.
Putting the evidence into practice
Clinicians recommend starting with two 30-minute outings per week and tracking sleep and mood in a simple notebook. Those who combine the Bosphorus path on weekdays with a Belgrad Forest hike on Saturday report the steadiest gains. Anyone experiencing persistent symptoms should consult a physician at Acibadem or their local family health center before beginning a new routine.
Next month the hospital network will open registration for a free guided walk series along the Bosphorus path on Tuesday evenings, limited to 25 people per session. Early sign-up is advised through the hospital’s website.
