On a recent Sunday morning on the Moda Sahil promenade, dozens of Istanbulites could be seen doing pull-ups, stretching, and working their abs—without paying a single kuruş for a gym membership. Outdoor fitness parks have become one of Istanbul’s best-kept wellness secrets, with new equipment cropping up along waterfronts and in leafy neighborhoods across the city.

The surge in outdoor exercise options comes at a time when summer temperatures are setting new records, and locals are searching for ways to stay fit and socialise while avoiding crowded indoor spaces. With data from the Turkish Statistical Institute showing that only 32% of adults in Istanbul meet the World Health Organization’s recommended weekly physical activity levels, accessible and attractive public gyms are vital for public health.

Fitness Circuits Along Istanbul’s Shores

Kadıköy’s coastline stands out for its dedicated outdoor fitness area, stretching from Fenerbahçe Park towards Caddebostan. Here, users cycle through bodyweight stations: elliptical walkers, leg presses, monkey bars and sit-up benches, all free to use. Weekly yoga meet-ups, run by the Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi (IBB), attract a mix of students and seniors. Further north, the Emirgan Park circuit weaves between the famous tulip gardens, offering chest presses and rowing machines with panoramic views of the Bosphorus. In the mornings, local running club Bosphorus Runners often set up informal group workouts on the park’s circuits.

Nature lovers head to Belgrad Forest, where a 6.5-kilometre fitness trail meanders through dense woodland. The Atatürk Arboretum entrance, off Bahçeköy Merkez Caddesi, is the starting point for circuit stations featuring parallel bars, climbing frames, and push-up benches every few hundred metres. The forest circuit is managed by the İstanbul Orman Bölge Müdürlüğü and remains one of the few places where you can combine resistance training with trail running away from traffic fumes.

Data Shows Soaring Popularity

The IBB’s 2025 annual parks report notes that outdoor gym usage rose 47% compared to the previous year, with average weekend attendance at major circuits (like Caddebostan, Maçka Park and Maltepe Sahil) exceeding 4,000 users. Installation of new equipment—often labelled "Açık Hava Spor Alanı"—has become a feature of most district municipalities’ budgets. Crucially, all these facilities are free and maintained weekly by park staff. By comparison, monthly indoor gym fees in central districts now typically exceed 1,600 TL—a steep barrier for many young adults and pensioners.

With the government’s "Herkes İçin Spor" (Sport For Everyone) initiative, over 150 new outdoor fitness areas have been added citywide since 2024, according to İBB’s sports directorate data. The campaign has a particular focus on underserved suburbs along the Marmara and in Esenyurt, aiming to close the fitness gap between Istanbul’s different neighbourhoods.

For best results outdoors, experts at Acibadem Hospital’s sports clinic recommend early morning or just-before-sunset sessions, when equipment is less crowded and temperatures cooler. Don’t forget to bring water, sunscreen, and a towel—public toilets and water fountains can be found at most large parks but may be scarce on smaller coastal paths.

As summer continues, Istanbul’s fitness-minded residents have more open-air options than ever before. The only challenge? Deciding between Bosphorus views, forest shade, or seaside breezes for your next free workout session.
