Istanbul’s parkrun scene has quietly flourished since lockdown restrictions eased, with weekly meet-ups drawing hundreds of regulars along the Bosphorus and inside the city’s greenest parks. Registration for these free, timed 5km runs has soared this summer. So where should you lace up if you want a sociable, energising start to your Saturday?
Staying active outdoors is more than a wellness trend in Istanbul. With gyms making a slow post-pandemic comeback and more residents looking for cost-effective ways to exercise, parkruns have become a low-barrier option for people of all ages. The timing is right: recent data from the Turkish Statistical Institute shows that 37% of Istanbul residents report feeling “less active” than before 2020. Many crave new reasons to get out, explore their city and connect with neighbours while doing something good for their health.
The flagship event remains the Bebek parkrun, which starts just beside the Starbucks on Cevdet Paşa Caddesi and follows the scenic promenade all the way to Arnavutköy. Organisers with İstanbul Koşu Topluluğu (Istanbul Running Community) oversee the 7:30 am start every Saturday, catering to a mix of seasoned runners and first-timers. After this waterfront dash, many cool down with simit or tea on the grass beside Bebek Parkı.
Further inland, the Maçka Demokrasi Park parkrun blends a less touristy feel and a friendly, club-like atmosphere. Marked by clear signage at main entrances off Maçka Caddesi and Süleyman Seba Caddesi, this hilly 5km loop is popular among university students living around Nişantaşı as well as families from Beşiktaş. Children under 11 can participate with a registered adult, and many strollers can be seen cruising around on clear mornings.
Both courses are free to join, but require a one-time sign-up at parkrun.com.tr, where your unique barcode tracks finish times each week. The events have support from the Şişli and Beşiktaş municipal councils, which supply volunteers and basic first aid. With parking a challenge near both locations, most runners arrive on foot, by bike or using city buses.
The numbers show the parkrun boom: Bebek saw more than 270 finishers on the last Saturday of June, double its weekly turnout compared to summer 2023. Maçka’s parkrun averages nearly 130 runners even during steamy July mornings, and Instagram photos reveal a diverse crowd—retirees, teens, even pets on leads.
The cost structure couldn’t be simpler—participation is always free, in keeping with parkrun’s global model. All you need is a barcode (print-out or on mobile). Organisers have also piloted a monthly Family Day session, with juice, fruit and children’s medals funded by a grant from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, most recently on 15 June.
This local parkrun culture supports more than just running. Koşu Topluluğu volunteers steer new arrivals towards city support services and fitness discounts, while some local businesses—like Bebek Kahvesi and Cup of Joy—offer %10 parkrun discounts for Saturday finishers who show a valid barcode.
If you’re interested in joining, your best bet is to register online in advance and follow Istanbul parkrun updates on their Instagram or Telegram group. The next Family Day is scheduled for 20 July in Maçka. Detailed start locations, accessibility info and community rules are published weekly at parkrun.com.tr/events/maçka-demokrasi-parkı; the Bebek parkrun is listed under the Bosphorus Run section.
All levels and ages are welcome. Volunteers are always needed for marshalling, guiding and timekeeping—especially during peak summer weeks. For those looking to support a wider cause, parkrun’s Turkish branch is also recruiting volunteers for a new autumn series in Florya Atatürk Ormanı starting this September.
For a full reset and a new social routine, joining a parkrun could be your simplest healthy habit this Istanbul summer. Just bring comfortable shoes, a water bottle, your barcode—and a smile for your fellow early risers.
