The summer swim season in Istanbul is surging, with city-run aquatic centres and private pools reporting full classes and expanded programming for children, families, and seniors across the city.

This uptick in participation reflects a larger shift in Istanbul's fitness culture. Recent public health data from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality show a 20% increase in community fitness event attendance compared to last year, with aquatic programs leading the pack. With outdoor temperatures rising—Kadıköy registered 33°C last Saturday—swimming is becoming the wellness activity of choice, offering not just exercise but also a way to escape Istanbul’s packed city streets and dense humidity.

Diversified Swim Programs Across the City

Centres like Ataköy Olimpiyat Yüzme Havuzu and the Altunizade Youth Centre in Üsküdar now run swim programs for ages from toddlers to the over-60s. The Ataköy pool, located on Rauf Orbay Caddesi near airport hotels, introduced twice-daily beginner sessions for children this July, while the municipality's Health for All campaign launched women-only swim hours at nine venues, including the Maltepe Aquapark. Private aquatic fitness companies, such as AquaCity Istanbul in Bayrampaşa, have added joint physiotherapy swim classes and pre-work morning swim clubs. Arzu Dalkılıç, program director at AquaCity, says every lane is booked well beyond the typical school summer break window, with retirees and families filling spaces once dominated by competitive teams.

Registration is handled via the Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi (IBB) Spor A.Ş. portal or in person at venue kiosks. Monthly passes at public pools start from 495 TL (as of July 2026), including unlimited open swim and structured classes. For families on the European side, several municipal centres on Cumhuriyet Caddesi in Şişli and the Florya Spor Kompleksi near the Marmaray line have rolled out "learn to swim" packages, with instructors certified through the Turkish Swimming Federation.

Swimming by the Numbers

Official IBB figures show over 22,000 Istanbul residents enrolled in swim programs at municipal facilities since April 2026. Altunizade Youth Centre recorded a 35% jump in adult swim lessons after launching Silver Swimmers, a program for adults aged 55+, in partnership with Acibadem Hospital Network. Private pool memberships, while more expensive (monthly access at AquaCity Istanbul is 1,750 TL), have seen a 15% rise, indicating growing demand even outside subsidised offerings. For lower-income neighbourhoods such as Gaziosmanpaşa, the city rolled out free weekend swim mornings for children up to age 14 this summer, aiming to address the widespread need for safe, accessible water recreation.

Looking forward, the city council announced plans to add new outdoor pool facilities in both Kadıköy and Eyüp by 2027 and expand mobile swim lesson buses piloted in Sancaktepe last summer. Residents considering aquatic exercise can sign up online, with schedules and subsidies posted on the IBB website and at each pool entrance. Health officials caution pool-goers to observe all safety advisories, particularly for children and non-swimmers, and recommend anyone with specific health concerns consult with their local doctor or a hospital such as Acibadem Altunizade before starting a new program.
