Istanbul Police Face Pressure After Three Major Crimes This Week

A 34-year-old man was stabbed outside the Kadıköy Saturday Market on Moda Caddesi shortly before noon on Tuesday, triggering a rapid-response deployment from the Kadıköy District Police Directorate that drew three ambulances and two squad cars within eight minutes. The victim, identified only by his initials in official filings, was transferred to Marmara University Training and Research Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. A suspect was detained the same afternoon near the Haydarpaşa ferry terminal.

The timing matters. Istanbul enters its highest-footfall weeks of the year in July, with the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism projecting more than 5.8 million foreign visitors to the city between July and August 2026. Police commanders are under standing orders from the Istanbul Governorship to keep visible incident rates low in high-density commercial zones, Kadıköy, Beyoğlu, and Sultanahmet chief among them. Tuesday's attack landed squarely in one of those zones, at a market that draws an estimated 40,000 shoppers each weekend.

Ferry Theft Network Broken Up in Üsküdar

Separate from the stabbing, the Istanbul Anti-Smuggling and Organised Crime Bureau announced Wednesday the dismantling of a six-person theft network that had been operating on İDO and Şehir Hatları passenger ferries since at least March. The group is alleged to have lifted mobile phones, wallets, and luggage across routes connecting Üsküdar, Eminönü, and Karaköy. Police say recovered items include 47 mobile phones and roughly 28,000 Turkish lira in cash. Three suspects are remanded pending trial at Istanbul's 2nd Criminal Court of Peace; the other three were released under judicial supervision.

The ferry lines carry close to 400,000 passengers daily across the Bosphorus and Golden Horn, making them a persistent target for pickpocket networks, according to data compiled by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's transportation department. The bust follows a similar operation in November 2025 that netted nine suspects on the Kabataş-Kadıköy route. What distinguishes the latest case, investigators say, is the network's use of distraction teams, one member creating a commotion at the boarding gate while others worked the crowd on the gangway.

Coast Guard Pulls Two Swimmers from Bosphorus Currents

On Sunday evening, Turkish Coast Guard Command Station Istanbul recovered two swimmers in separate incidents from the Bosphorus near Bebek Bay and the Rumeli Hisarı shoreline. Both individuals, believed to be tourists in their twenties, had underestimated the notoriously strong mid-channel current. Neither required hospitalisation, but the rescues triggered a renewed advisory from the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Health warning against unsupervised swimming anywhere along the European or Asian Bosphorus shoreline between June and September.

The coast guard logged 23 Bosphorus water-rescue operations in June alone, compared with 17 in June 2025, a rise officials attribute to higher tourist volumes and a hotter-than-average early summer. France recorded more than 2,000 excess deaths during its June heatwave; Turkey's own meteorological service reported Istanbul's average daily high at 34.2 degrees Celsius for the final week of June, two degrees above the 30-year mean. Heat drives more people to the waterfront, and some misjudge the risks.

For residents and visitors navigating the city this week, the Istanbul Police Department's emergency coordination line, 155 for police, 112 for medical, remains the primary contact. The Kadıköy stabbing investigation is ongoing and the Directorate has increased plainclothes patrols on Moda Caddesi and the surrounding market district through at least 15 July. The Metropolitan Municipality's UKOME traffic and safety board is scheduled to meet on 8 July, where councillors aligned with Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's CHP administration are expected to push for expanded CCTV coverage on ferry boarding docks, a proposal the Governorship, aligned with the AKP national government, has so far declined to fast-track fund.
